I had the pleasure of working with Billy and Julie Shuler with The Shuler Group for about a year. My situation was very challenging and unique in that I actually live in Accokeek, Maryland, outside of the D.C. area. My father, David, lived in Forney, Texas. Billy met my father a few years ago, because they lived near each other, and realized my dad was kind of a lonely, older guy having some problems, but too proud to reach out for help or to let me start dealing with his bills for him, or anything along those lines. As time went on, it became apparent my father was having issues with dementia. He was also starting to go deaf after years of muzzle loading (target shooting with black powder rifles) as his primary hobby. I had a lot of trouble trying to talk to him to see how he was doing because he couldn’t hear me and kept losing his hearing aids. I also work full time and have a young child and couldn’t easily fly out to Texas either. Billy contacted me when he noticed my father’s short-term memory loss and started to worry that his family might not know what was happening. Billy was able to help him with various tasks, such as taking him to and from Doctor’s appointments, helping him to get a CPAP machine, getting his car repaired, helping around the house, and even using Facetime so I could see the state of my dad’s house, which wasn’t too bad at first, but started to get progressively worse. After my efforts to have groceries delivered to my dad’s house and to have cleaners and medical professionals stop by to check on him eventually failed (he forgot to bring the groceries in sometimes and was paranoid about the cleaners and nurses who stopped by), Billy and I started making plans to get him closer to me in Maryland where I could take better care of him. I knew my dad was not able to navigate an airport by himself, and Billy was kind enough to fly with my dad, meet me in the airport and jump back on a plane and fly back to Dallas the same day. Billy is a SRES (Seniors Real Estate Specialist), so I knew that he and The Shuler Group would be a perfect fit to help me through the process of selling my father’s home when that needed to happen. Once again, Billy truly went above and beyond what anyone might expect of a long-time personal friend, let alone a real estate specialist. When I flew out to Texas to sort through and pack my father’s belongings, both he and Julie checked in on me regularly, brought me lunch, and helped with cleaning and sorting things. In preparing to get the house sold, because I was out of state, Billy managed different contractors for me that were working at the house. Because I didn’t have a sense of what kind of flooring, paint, and other improvements would be preferred by people looking for homes in the area, Billy helped me select those he thought would look best in the house and increase its sales potential. The house went on the market May 4th and by May 9th, it was under contract for 10% over asking. We closed a month later after making a few improvements requested by the buyer, but nothing that took much effort, and Billy was there helping out with a contractor again throughout the process. Billy and Julie presented the options for the various offers I received on the house in an organized, easy-to-understand manner and helped me pick what they truly believed was the best offer that I was likely to be happiest with. I could say it has been a pleasure to work with Billy and Julie with The Shuler Group, but was so much more than that. They were practically angels, and without them, taking care of my father and his house would have been significantly more challenging. Whether you need to buy or sell real estate, I highly recommend them. They are trust worthy, hard working, and exceptionally good people. Especially if you are elderly or needing a realtor for your elderly parents or friends, I would recommend The Shuler Group before any other real estate company in the area. Sheri Sheri Nestell
